The Culture Cup. Between Man United and Liverpool. The two best teams from the two cities of culture in England. Barring London obviously.

Yes Chrissy, it does indeed. And no, I wasn't aware either...

Nice one, P. No offence taken about London... ;-)

This builds on the rivalry cups you see in college football (American). Most teams have some sot of trophy they play for when they play their rival. That's been moved over to MLS. Some of the competitions were started by the fans (Rocky Mountain Cup, Brimstone Cup) while some of were created by the teams/league as a promotional tool (Atlantic Cup, Honda Superclasico)

Excellent, Jason. Thanks for pointing that out. Very interesting to hear (from a British point of view) how that all came about.

I suppose it's not an entirely alien concept to us here. In Rugby Union we have the annual Six Nations tournament amongst which the England v Scotland game is always played for the Calcutta Cup. I think similar things also go on in Cricket too, although I'm not as big a fan so I can't confirm the details of that.

Anyway, thanks Jason. Always good to learn a bit of background information!

There has been a debate on American Soccer News about this very topic for some time. The majority seem to think San Jose-L.A. is the biggest...

Curious... thanks Soccer Source. Interesting seeing people defending their own local derbies and promoting theirs as the most fervent.

I think here in England we've got nothing to quite match the Celtic v Rangers pairing north of the border...

Not Liverpool - Man United? Chelsea - Arsenal? Sunderland - Newcastle? Hmm, maybe not. But doesn't any rivalry pale compared to the Old Firm? Where else do you have a local derby with religious undertones? (Other than Beirut. There was a Four Four Two story on one of the Beirut derbies awhile back)

Yeah, the games here between Celtic & Rangers are intense enough without there being an other trophy at stake.

I'm sure they do something similar in Rugby, when Scotland play England in the 6 Nations it's also for the Calcutta Cup.

Soccer Source - you've hit the nail squarely on the head with your comment about the religious overtones. That's what sets it so distinctly apart from any of the English derby matches.

Selectabet - I shudder to think what the Rangers/Celtic matches would be like if you added a *trophy* to the equation!! 'Semi-nuclear' wouldn't be far off in terms of the friction it'd generate!

We Love SPAOTP!
